Mayor Eric Garcetti of the City of Los Angeles built on the ShakeAlert system which was developed by US Geological Survey released ShakeAlertLA, an app for mobile users which sends alerts to users within the Los Angeles country.
The app is available for both the Apple and Android devices and is available both in English and Spanish. The app also helps the users to prepare for an earthquake, get details on recent earthquakes and also find help after an earthquake. The app sends a warning to Smart Phones when shaking is expected in the city.
The app uses a network of seismic sensors distributed all over the region to detect the earthquakes and send a warning to smartphones when shaking is expected in Los Angeles country. Along with the warning, the app also features maps of recent local earthquakes and LA specific info and details about how to be ready for and also get help after a major quake. The biggest challenge for the ShakeAlertLA app is depending on existing smartphone carriers to quickly deliver the warnings using the cell networks which are easily overwhelmed.
